Science of Flexibility - Friday evening lecture Ever wonder why some people are more flexible than others? Or what you can do to improve your own flexibility? In this two hour workshop, Robyn will provide you the with an overview of the neural and mechanical components that modulate flexibility to help you understand the inner workings of your body during yoga asana. Learn how muscle, connective tissue, and the nervous system integrate to govern your range of motion. Weekend experience Building on the concepts introduced in Friday’s Science of Flexibility lecture, we will begin to systematically explore how the nervous system controls, coordinates, and learns movement, and why traditional anatomy isn’t all that important. Pertinent concepts in neurophysiology, neuroscience, motor control, rehabilitation, and pain science will be introduced.
In addition, you will leave with a firm understanding of: • how to assess joint range of motion and movement patterns • the difference between flexibility and mobility and how to improve both • the difference between motor control and stability • how to facilitate motor learning through external, rather than internal cueing • provide effective adjustments to address common movement restrictions
Movement Neuromechanics (Saturday AM/PM): Don’t let the fancy words deter you. Over the course of 4 hours, we will systematically explore how the nervous system learns, coordinates, and controls human movement. This is not a dry lecture, but rather a movement based exploration of the mind-body connection. Basic concepts in neurophysiology, neuroscience, motor control, and pain science will be introduced.
Socket to me! (Sunday AM): Kick your knowledge up a level and learn to navigate the architecture of your ball and socket joints (hip and shoulder). With functional anatomy as our foundation, we will assess the movements of these joints to identify latent dysfunctional patterns, learn how to discern root cause of injury, and perform corrective and performance exercises to restore and enhance optimal mobility and stability. Workshop includes a set of Yoga Tune Up Therapy Balls.

During the day, wake up with morning pranayama, meditation and yoga in the outdoor yoga pavilion, cooled by ocean breezes, under a custom-designed tent on an ample, suspended wooden floor. Yoga is followed by scrumptious vegetarian brunch featuring local exotic fruits. Then explore white sand beaches, peaceful harbors and rocky shorelines; go hiking (in many different ecosystems), snorkeling, scuba diving, sailing or kayaking. Visit colorful local festivals, historical and ecological tours and much more. Return to a gentle, therapeutic yoga class in the afternoon to unwind from a day of relaxing Caribbean style. At night we gather around the pool for a sumptuous dinner prepared from local organic produce, then enjoy optional evening activities such as sunset on the west end beach, dancing, or free time.
The vacation residences are steps away from the ocean beach, pool and neighboring beachfront restaurants. The beautifully designed and fully-furnished suites feature a comfortable living and dining area, kitchen (many with washer/dryer), two bedrooms, two baths, and a large open gallery with a view of the beach. Four people share a suite, two in each bedroom. Rent or bring your own gear, and enjoy snorkeling directly off the resorts' beaches. She is offering an optional 15 hour Yoga Therapy Training during our week! You will learn how to design a safe and effective yoga program for your student (or yourself!) that includes self-massage using Yoga Tune Up therapy balls, corrective exercises, and modifications to traditional yoga poses.
